Meet Billy Bob!

After a couple of coats of paint, the goat is starting to take on his final personality. The goat closely resembles an Alpine Ibex or Steinbock, an ancient European mountain goat. These goats were found in the mountainous regions of Bavaria and Austria and were probably the inspiration for the figure.

Looff was from this region, as was Edward Buff, a carver for the Looff factory who was responsible for many of the menagerie figures of the Looff carrousels of the period. It is thought that Buff may have been the carver for our goat, as it closely matches some of his known works.

Buff also created the Bison figures found only on Looff machines, and also influenced Looff in the more muscular Black Forest carving style of later figures.
