During restoration, Earl's mane was a mess of plaster that had to be chipped off before sanding could begin. While the work was in process, the radio was on an oldies station and The Duke of Earl began to play. Wendy decided that a carousel with a horse named Prince should also have an Earl as well. So he was dubbed Duke of Earl.
